Treasurer Recruitment

The question
(from cuc-presidents@yahoogroups.com - an email list for presidents, vp's and past-presidents of congregations)
For the first time ever our congregation is without a treasurer and, unfortunately, no willing prospects at this time.
I am wondering if other congregations have experience this problem, how it was handled, and what steps you had to take to proceed.
Any experiences, advice and suggestions that you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.
The Responses
----------
We have hired an office manager (a new role which replaces a former more secretarial role) and purchased integrated church software called HELP. The office administrator will be responsible for the day-to-day entering of receivables and expenses – the writing out of cheques, filing payroll info with Rev Can etc. We are not sure how the details of all this will work; she just started April 01 – there will still be an accounting function which we will pay for on contract (that used to be a congregant for the last 15 years) and there is a volunteer who enters collection data on Sunday morning as well as the treasurer.

At our congregation, in desperation, the Past President took on the role until we could find someone- she streamlined the work and worked with the past Treasurer to get the computer programme up and running.
Then we decided to do a 'cabinet shift'. The Secretary was asked to take on the Treasurers role, a Member-at- large took on the secretary's role and then we searched for another M-at-L.
It was not perfect but the Treasurer's job went to someone who was well aware of the needs and the Board responsibilty for money.
At the same time, the finances were set up on the computer (I believe simply accounting) with someone in charge of the bookkeeping- we now pay a bookkeeper.

my suggestion is to try the mentoring approach as it is less intimidating to those who lack experience.
Treasurer is always a challenging position to fill. For the past couple of years, our long-serving treasurer has split the duties with a novice "co-treasurer". With any luck, this co-treasurer will have gained sufficient experience to either take over or to work with another novice "co-treasurer" so that the experienced "mentor" can finally take a break!
